STAFF REPORTS
Rome Police are reminding the public that there is an 11 p.m. curfew in place for anyone under the age of 17.
That reminder comes following an incident this past weekend involving a number of juveniles downtown, according to Rome Assistant Police Chief Debbie Burnett.
“We had citizens that wanted to enjoy some of the Shakespeare Festival,” she said. “Some of the juveniles were so disruptive, that families got up and left the event. Unfortunately, when officers would approach these pods of juveniles, they would run.”
Burnett said the officers would gather up who they could.
“Then at 11 o’clock, when the curfew was in effect, officers would tell them they had to go home,” Burnett added. “I know the officers had to get the transfer van at least twice to collect juvenile and then call mom and dad to come and get them. This kept going on until around 1 o’clock in the morning.”
There are some exceptions to the curfew.
“If they are with their parents, if they are at a school event or if they are going to and from work, they can be out after 11 p.m., Burnett said. “Otherwise, they need to be at home, their friend’s house or wherever they are supposed to be for the night by 11 p.m.”
Burnett was a guest on Tuesday’s First News with Tony McIntosh.
