Calhoun receives school safety grant

The Calhoun City School System has been awarded $153,750 to improve school safety through violence prevention.

According to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice, the grant comes from the COPS’ School Violence Prevention Program which was part of the Student, Teachers, and Officers Preventing School Violence Act of 2018 passed Congress.

These funds will provide K-12, primary and secondary schools up to 75% funding for school safety measures such as coordination with law enforcement; training for local law enforcement officers; metal detectors, locks, lighting, and other deterrent measures as well as technology for expedited notification of local law enforcement during an emergency and any other measure that the COPS Office determines may provide a significant improvement in security.
