ROME POLICE DEPARTMENT
Since the beginning of 2019, Rome Police Department K9 handler Josh Glover, along with his partner “K9 Ash” have made numerous seizures of large quantities of drugs, that collectively, have a street value of over $1 million. That accomplishment is not an easy feat and is attributed to the determination and relentless pursuit of excellence that is displayed by Pfc. Glover on a daily basis.
K9 Ash, a Belgian Malinois, celebrated his two-year anniversary of service at the police department in September as well as his third birthday. K9 Ash was selected as a new department canine by Glover in September of 2017, followed by a rigorous twelve-week training program. K9 Ash, along with all past and present Rome canines, was trained from start to finish by their handlers at the Rome Police Department’s canine training course. K9 Ash was purchased from Southern Coast K9 in Florida for $9,000.
After completing the training program, Pfc. Glover and K9 Ash continued working patrol, where they actively conduct traffic stops, respond to high priority incidents, perform demonstrations, and attend public events.
Although K9 Ash is relatively new in his career as a Police K9, he has made a substantial difference within the community. K9 Ash is responsible for the apprehension of numerous suspects through the use of his dual-purpose training which gives him the ability to track, search and apprehend if needed. In addition to this, K9 Ash earned a life-saving award for his ability to track and locate a missing female along with her infant during the late hours of the night.
As previously stated, K9 Ash has detected and seized over one million dollars worth of illegal narcotics and $4,800 in cash for the current year. These values are determined by utilizing the HIDTA standards (High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area). Because of K9 Ash’s consistent use, 29 pounds of illegal narcotics, to include marijuana, methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and synthetic narcotics, have been removed from the streets. Pfc. Glover and K9 Ash will continue working toward providing a better quality of life for the citizens within our community.
