Rome Half Marathon/5K All-Area Cross Country Banquet 2019

December 2nd, 2019 – 10:25 AM

Rome Half Marathon/5K Press Release –

ROME, Ga. – Greater Rome’s top high school cross country runners of the season have been selected and will be recognized when 2019 GoGo Running All-Area Cross Country Banquet is held Thursday, Dec. 12 at 6 p.m., in the Krannert Ballroom at Berry College.

In addition to the honors the All-Area Boys and Girls teams will receive at the banquet, the Boys and Girls Runners of the Year and Coaches of the Year will be announced. One of the best distance runners Greater Rome has ever produced will address the area’s current high school athletes who have followed in his footsteps when Dr. David Herren, a former standout at Rome High and at Georgia Tech, will serve as the guest speaker at the banquet. The banquet precedes the annual Rome Half Marathon to be held Saturday, Dec. 14 at State Mutual Stadium.

In addition to the 13.1-mile Half Marathon, the event that is presented by GoGo Running and Redmond Regional Medical Center includes a 5-kilometer race. After becoming a record-setting runner at Rome High, where he earned All-Area Runner of the Year honors following a record-setting career with the Wolves, Herren went on to run at Georgia Tech where he earned Academic All-America honors in cross country and became just the fifth runner in the program’s history to qualify for the NCAA National Championship and served as the Yellow Jackets’ team captain in track. Herren earned undergraduate and graduate degrees Georgia Tech, received his medical degree from Medical College of Georgia in Augusta and after doing his internship at Baptist Hospital in Nashville did his residency at Vanderbilt University.
A board-certified ophthalmologist, Herren has been practicing at the Harbin Clinic Eye Center since 2016.

Schools that have received at least one donation check include Armuchee, Coosa, Model, Pepperell, Rome, Calhoun, Gordon Central, Rockmart, Darlington, Providence Prep Academy, St. Mary’s, Cedartown and Unity Christian. Some of these schools have only had volunteers for the race for one year while others have participated with volunteers each year, which is the requirement for schools to be eligible for a donation.
