Rome Middle School Healthcare Science Class Gets CPR Certified through Floyd Medical Center

December 13th, 2019 – 2:55 PM

Rome City Schools Press Release –

Many seventh-grade Healthcare Science students at Rome Middle School are now CPR certified thanks to Rome City Schools’ partnership with Floyd Medical Center. Lauren Fallin, Healthcare Science teacher at Rome Middle School, alongside Floyd Medical Center employees Jamie Brannon (Corporate Health Assistant Director), Amy Harkins (Corporate Health Specialist), Jeni Carson (Program Leader) and Nikki McCollum (LPN, Corporate Health Specialist) facilitated the checkoffs needed for these students to become CPR certified.

After quizzing the students on proper CPR techniques, students were then instructed to begin practicing on their mannequins.

“Remember, the most important thing is placement,” said Harkins as students counted to 30 while performing compressions. Harkins then demonstrated the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), making sure to specify the ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ of the device.

“Having Floyd here to aid in the certification for these students is so important—more so when they transition into high school because they start going to clinicals and actually putting this knowledge to use,” said Fallin. “It currently plays into our standards as we are learning about anatomy – the heart, respiratory system, etc.

They see how all of this works together, which is great. Also, doing this gives these students confidence; I love seeing them show off their cards when they get them. “It’s so awesome that Floyd does this for us, because not many people are able to become CPR certified at such a young age,” Fallin added. “We love their support and are so thankful for them.”
