Dalton Man Arrested After leading Summerville Police on High-Speed Chase

April 18th, 2020

WZQZ Radio –

(via WZQZ) Summerville Police were involved in a high-speed chase on Thursday afternoon after a Dalton man fled in a pickup truck.

Police were dispatched after Chattooga 911 received a call about a truck that involved in an incident out of Whitfield County.  Police found the truck being driven as it turned on Lewis Street at a high rate of speed headed northbound.  The truck ran the stop sign at West First Street and continued onto Northwest Congress Street.  The truck then traveled on Nixon Street.

Police attempted to block the vehicle at the intersection of Orchard Road.  At that point the driver of the truck cut through a yard and began heading out Orchard Road towards a dead end.  The truck then left the roadway onto a dirt trail and stopped, with the driver jumping from the vehicle and fleeing on foot into a gully where the suspect finally obeyed commands to get on the ground.

The front quarter-panel of the Ford F-150 was damaged, but police determined it had not been damaged during the chase.  Police said that while a report had been filed in Whitfield County about the truck, it had not been reported stolen.

Thirty-year-old Preston James Dutton was arrested on a variety of traffic charges related to the pursuit and booked into the Chattooga County Jail.  Dutton told police he “didn’t know why he ran.”
