[VIDEO] City Commission votes down temporary public consumption ordinance

June 9, 2020–4:37 a.m.

STAFF REPORTS

The Rome City Commission has voted down a proposed amendment to the city code that would have allowed public consumption of alcohol downtown on a temporary basis.

Despite amendments to the original plan setting a 60-day deadline and ending public consumption at 10 p.m. instead of 11 p.m., the measure failed by a 5-3 vote Monday night.

Backers of the ordinance said it would have given pouring establishments a way to make up for the revenue they lost during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The measure was nearly identical to one that was voted down by the commission in 2017.
