(Via WZQZ radio) A Summerville, Georgia man was arrested earlier this month during a protest in Asheville, North Carolina.
According to reports, the man was taking part in a protest over the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.
Thirty-year-old Joshua Jinks of Summerville is accused of “setting off fireworks at law enforcement during a protest in Asheville”; that according to the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office.
Jinks was arrested and booked into the Buncombe Jail after law enforcement said he was firing “re-loadable mortars” – described as a type of firework throughout the evening of June 2 and into the next morning.
Jinks was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, according to docket records from the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Department.
In a press release about Jinks’ arrest – along with other protesters – Buncombe Sheriff’s officials said, “Please do not let people from outside of Buncombe County disrupt the largely peaceful protests being held by our community.”
