There were fewer first-time claims for unemployment insurance in May when compared to April, but the number is still high.
According to the Georgia Department of Labor, Floyd County saw 7,309 initial claims last month, down from 12,549 the month before. There were just 301 in May of 2019.
Bartow County reported 9,161 claims, down from 16,521, but still way up from the 181 filed in May of last year.
Gordon County had 5,302 in May, down from 8,697. There were 175 this time last year.
Polk County had 2,806, down from 4,735 in April but up from 128 in May of 2019.
Chattooga County saw 608 initial claims last month, down from 709 in April and up from 32 in May of last year.
