Redmond Receives Level 1 Emergency Cardiac Care Designation

August 21st, 2020 – 10:23 AM

Redmond Regional Medical Center –

Redmond Regional Medical Center is the third hospital in Georgia to be designated a Level 1 Emergency Cardiac Care Center by the Georgia Department of Public Health, Office of EMS and Trauma. Level 1 is Georgia’s highest level of recognition for emergency cardiac care. Redmond is the only hospital in Northwest Georgia with an Emergency Cardiac Care Center designation.

“We thank the Georgia Department of Public Health for conferring our designation as a Level 1 Emergency Cardiac Care Center,” said John Quinlivan, Chief Executive Officer at Redmond Regional Medical Center. “This recognition validates our team’s uncompromising dedication to advancing high-quality, comprehensive cardiovascular services for our community. We are honored to serve the residents of Northwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama with the Georgia’s highest level of emergency cardiac care designation.”

The American Heart Association reports that cardiovascular disease is responsible for over 800,000 deaths each year (2,300 deaths each day) in the United States. To improve these outcomes and reduce the death burden from cardiovascular disease and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Georgia, legislation was signed in 2017 establishing the Office of Cardiac Care within the Georgia Department of Public Health.

The mission of the Office of Cardiac Care is to “improve survival rates in Georgia from out-of-hospital cardiac arrests and heart attacks through quality improvement, benchmarking and evidenced-based guidelines, supported by standardized data collection and reporting system.” The 2017 legislation charged the Office of Cardiac Care with designating hospitals as Emergency Cardiac Care Centers through a rigorous evaluation process.

According to the Office of Cardiac Care, there are multiple benefits of Emergency Cardiac Care Center designation. Among these benefits are protocols used by EMS to diagnose, triage, and transport cardiac patients to the appropriate cardiac resource hospital in time. Designated Emergency Cardiac Care Center hospitals “save lives, reduce disability, and improve quality of life.”

Residents of Northwest Georgia now have access to the highest level of Emergency Cardiac Care Center designation at Redmond Regional Medical Center. Level 1 designation reflects the comprehensive cardiac services provided to patients at Redmond from emergency services to open-heart surgery and other advanced cardiac interventions.

In the letter announcing the Level 1 designation from The Georgia Department of Public Health, Commissioner Dr. Kathryn Toomey stated, “The Department applauds Redmond Regional Medical Center for this achievement and appreciates the contributions that you make to the health and well-being of Georgians, as well as to those visiting our state.”
