Rome Police PSA: Curfew for Minors on Broad Street

September 8th, 2020 – 4:47 PM

Rome Police Department –

As a reminder the City of Rome adopted a Curfew for Minors ordinance in 2018. The Rome Police Department has received a large number of complaints over the past several weeks of juveniles violating this ordinance, particularly on Broad Street and near the Town Green.

Ordinance Sec 14-22 states between the hours of 11:00pm and 5:00am it is unlawful for persons under the age of 17, unless that person is actively supervised by an adult, to be present at, in, or upon the public streets, highways, roads, sidewalks, alleys, parks, school grounds, playgrounds or other public grounds, public places, public buildings, parking lots, vacant lots or any place unsupervised by an adult having the lawful authority to be at such places. The ordinance defines adult as a person twenty-one years of age or older. The ordinance does make allowance for persons participating in such things as school activities and employment.

Ordinance Sec 14-2 states that a person commits the offense of Disorderly Conduct if they cause, provoke or engage in any fight or brawl; if the person fails to obey a lawful order to disperse by a law enforcement officer; if they use abusive or obscene language or makes an obscene gesture.

The Rome Police Department has offered numerous warnings to the recent violators. Due to the repeated behaviors having caused disruptions of businesses and other citizens the Rome Police Department will take enforcement action as necessary.

Please remember these ordinances and laws apply everywhere, not just downtown.
