Seniors Jonathan Murphy and Steven Yan have been named Commended Students in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended Students are recognized for the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the qualifying test used for program entry.
“Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”
Murphy is a resident student from Durham, N.C. and is a member of the Soccer Academy. He has taken 12 AP and 8 honors courses and won E.L. Wright Awards in English 1 honors, Algebra 2 honors, and photography. He is a member of Mu Alpha Theta and Society Honoraire de Francias. Murphy is the son of Dr. Bryant Murphy and Mrs. Catrina Murphy of Durham, N.C.
Yan is a resident student from Shanghai, China. He has taken 12 AP and four honors courses and won E.L. Wright Awards in AP World History, Pre Calculus Honors, AP Chemistry, and AP Physics. He is a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, International Thespian Society, and Mu Alpha Theta and has been honored with the Everett. E. Porter Award for Excellence in Chemistry Laboratory, Bo Satterfield Spirit of LIfe Award, Phi Beta Kappa Book Award, and has received the Class Scholarship Award for both 10th and 11th grades. Yan is the son of Mr. Zhao Yan and Mrs. Bin Yu of Shanghai China.
