STAFF REPORTS

Rome City Commissioners got an update Monday night regarding a new gas line project to serve an expansion at International Paper in Coosa.

The project approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission consists of 7.8 miles of pipeline will be 12-inch steel.

The western end will be at Shorter Avenue and Redmond Circle and the eastern end will be at Kingston Highway and Goodman Road.

It will tie into Atlanta Gas Light’s existing system at both ends, according to Jodie Hart with Atlanta Gas Light.

“The great part of this is it’s going to be a great boost to your economy as well,” she said.  “We’ll have all the folks working on the project and it’s going to be a little over $10 million build for us to get extra gas out to out to International Paper.  It will also have enough capacity to serve any other industries that may want to locate out in that area.”

The nine-month project is slated for completion in early fall of 2021.

The construction will affect the Mt. Berry Trail and Charlton Street in the Summerville Park neighborhood.

Hart discussed communications efforts to keep citizens informed.

“We’ve got some other outreach that we are going to do on Charlton Street, some of the schools and churches, and to coordinate with parks and recreation,” she added.  “It will come with some intermittent lane closures, but we will also send out letters to notify people of that.  We also use all the mandated traffic controls and, where needed, we will have police officers out there to help direct traffic.”

Commissioner Mark Cochran expressed concerns about the route.

“I would really like to sit down and have discussions the final route,” he said.  “Because if it’s going to dig up our new Martha Berry Trail that is behind the post office and a whole lot of other things, I’d like to have more discussion about it.”

Hart said she would work to set up a meeting with commissioners.
