On Sunday evening (February 28th, 2021), a two vehicle accident resulted in 2 fatalities: A father and a son.
According to the Rome Police Department’s Georgia Motor Vehicle Crash Report, the accident occurred at the intersection of Redmond Circle and West Butler around 8:07 PM.
The accident occurred after a GMC Acadia was T-boned by a Chevy Tahoe.
According to the crash report, The driver of the Chevy Tahoe was traveling Northbound on Redmond Circle when the GMC Acadia entered the roadway attempting to turn left from West Butler. A witness on the scene of the wreck stated that the Chevy Tahoe was traveling at a very high rate of speed (potentially “over 80 mph”).
The 2 victims have been identified by Floyd County Deputy Coroner John Hamilton as 61-year-old Pompilio Cornejo, and 18-year-old Jose Cornejo.
*The Accident is still under investigation at this time.
Rome City Schools released a statement mourning the passing of Jose Cornejo:
“Rome City Schools is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Rome High School senior, Jose Cornejo-Cornejo.
RHS counselors, and additional system representatives, will be available throughout each day this week on campus to assist students during this difficult time.
Our thoughts are with the family and all of those affected by this loss.”
