Forrest statue to be moved to history center

April 13, 2021–8:41 p.m.

STAFF REPORTS

The Nathan Bedford Forrest statue that used to stand at Myrtle Hill Cemetery is going to be permanently relocated to the Rome Area History Center.

Rome City Commissioner Jamie Doss said city staff and the history center are making the recommendation.

A seven-member interpretation advisory committee is working on wording to go along with the statue.

“It’s important because it makes a difference whether the statue is indoors or outdoors,” Doss said.  “The committee, for the most part, likes the idea because they can tell the whole story of Nathan Bedford Forrest.  One thing the group has agreed to do is, to tell the truth, the good and the bad.  We do know that the location does meet state law.”

Forrest was a Confederate Army General but was a prominent figure in the foundation of the Ku Klux Klan.
