April 20th, 2021 – 5:40 PM

Staff Reports –

On Tuesday afternoon, the Floyd County Government hosted a National Arbor Day Event celebrating the county’s 31st year as a Tree City USA.

In this event at the Etowah Park (Located off of Kingston Road), the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Department partnered with multiple organizations like The Rome Floyd Chamber, The Georgia Tree Council, The Georgia Forestry Commission, Keep Rome/Floyd Beautiful, and the International Paper Company to officially reveal 17 new trees planted in the park.

The general areas at the park the trees are planted include the walking trail, the playground, near the tennis courts, and also by the Fire Station.

International Paper donated the trees in part to help with the loss of several trees during the ongoing gas-line project; They plan to donate 15 trees a year over the next four years.

Arbor Day is usually celebrated on the last Friday in April, but many states observe Arbor Day on different dates throughout the year based on the best tree-planting times in their area.

Much like Earth Day, is a holiday that celebrates nature. Its purpose is to encourage people to plant trees, and many communities traditionally take the opportunity to organize tree-planting and litter-collecting events on or around the holiday.
