City commission approves framework for landmarking committee

May 11, 2021–4:47 a.m.

STAFF REPORTS

The Rome City Commission has approved the framework for a new Landmarking Committee.

Landmarking could be used as a way to permanently recognize and memorialize local sites and structures that have historical, cultural or architectural significance.

The committee would be chaired by a Rome City Commissioner appointed by the mayor.

Other committee members would include representatives from the Rome Area History Center and the Rome Area Heritage Foundation, along with two “at-large” members with a specific interest in this area.

The Rome Historic Preservation Planner would be a non-voting member and serve as secretary.

The committee would establish an application for submission of landmarking requests, and establish a deadline for the submission of applications.

Sites would be limited to no more than two a year with dedication ceremonies coming during Heritage Holidays each October.
