STAFF REPORTS

A Shorter University football player was killed in a two-vehicle wreck Wednesday morning in DeKalb County, Alabama.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, a 2012 Jeep Wrangler collided with a 2004 Chevy Cavalier on DeKalb County Road 85 near DeKalb County Road 602, about four miles east of Henegar.

The driver of the Jeep, identified as 19-year old Josey Sargent of Henegar, was killed.

Josey was a freshman at Shorter and played Safety for the football team.

Shorter University head football coach posted the following on his social media page Wednesday:

“Heaven gained an angel today. Saddened by the loss of Josey Sargent who passed from a tragic car accident this morning. Josey brought so much joy to the Shorter Football program, but also the world! I still remember him and his family coming to my office just asking for an opportunity and he took every opportunity to show he belong and worked his tail off. He was one of the most dependable student-athletes we had here at Shorter! Coaches, teammates, and the University will miss him dearly!  I am asking everyone to pray for his family.”
