Rome has a new mayor.
By a 5-4 vote, Sundai Stevenson was elected mayor during Monday night’s Rome City Commission meeting.
Commissioners Bonny Askew, Mark Cochran, Bill Collins, and the newest commissioner Elaina Beeman all voted for Stevenson, who cast a vote for herself.
Commissioners Jim Bojo, Jamie Doss, and Randy Quick voted for Craig McDaniel, who also cast a vote for himself.
Stevenson is Rome’s first ever Black female mayor, and had previously served as mayor pro tem.
Meawnhile, Mark Cochran was elected the new mayor pro tem.
The vote was tied 4 to 4 with Mayor Stevenson casting the 5th and deciding vote.
