This is National Police Week, and the 2023 Rome/Floyd County Peace Officers Memorial Service will take place this Friday.

The service will begin at 11 a.m. at the Law Enforcement Complex Memorial Plaza.

There will be an Honor Roll Call where the names of 20 officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty will be read.

“This is also an acknowledgment and recognition of officers who continue to work each and every day to serve their communities,” said Rome Police Chief Denise Downer-McKinney. “So again, I invite you on May 19 at 11 o’clock on the grounds of the law enforcement center at 5 Government Plaza.”

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week as National Police Week.

Established by a joint resolution of Congress that same year, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
