Rome Police respond to several wrecks Monday

Vehicle hits First Baptist Church downtown

No injuries were reported when a vehicle driven by a 76-year-old Rome woman struck the First Baptist Church on East Fourth Avenue just before 9:30 a.m. Monday.

According to the accident report:

The driver told officers that she was attempting to parallel park and as she was backing up her foot slipped off the brake and onto the accelerator.

 The vehicle sped backward and struck the corner of the building causing damage to the vehicle and the church.

Report: SUV rear-ends a city bus in West Rome

One injury was reported after a Kia Sorrento rear-ended a City of Rome transit bus in West Rome just after 5 p.m. Monday.

According to the accident report:

The driver of the Sorrento said that she was pulling out of West Butler Street after getting food and thought the bus had pulled off.

She accidentally struck the rear end of the bus as it was stopped at the railroad tracks on Redmond Circle.

A 60-year-old man in the Kia was transported to AdventHealth Redmond for treatment after complaining of injury to his back, left shoulder left elbow, and right leg.

No passengers on the bus were injured.

The driver of the Kia was cited for following too closely.

Medical emergency the suspected cause of wreck on Riverside Drive

A 45-year-old Rome woman was taken to the hospital for treatment of what are believed to be minor injuries following a two-vehicle wreck on Riverside Drive at Chatillion Monday evening.

According to Rome Police:

The wreck occurred at around 6:19 p.m. when the woman suffered a medical emergency, causing her to lose control of her vehicle.

The GMC Yukon veered off the roadway, striking a Chevy Malibu that was parked at Pick o Deli.

The Yukon then struck a concrete pole in the parking lot and then a large shed before coming to rest down an embankment.

Man charged with DUI following Monday crash

A 48-year-old Rome man was charged with DUI following a single-vehicle wreck Monday at around 11 p.m. on East First Street at East Seventh Avenue.

According to a Rome Police report:

An officer arrived at the scene to find a vehicle with heavy damage sitting in the road near a damaged utility pole.

The driver complained of face and chest pain and admitted to having a few beers.

He was taken to Atrium Health Floyd for treatment and then to the Floyd County Jail.

Georgia Power was called to the scene on Tuesday to replace the broken utility pole.
