The Floyd County Commission held the first of three public hearings regarding the millage rate Tuesday.
Three people spoke during the hearing.
One took issue with the recent property assessments and county school taxes, neither of which are set by the county commission.
The commission only sets the rate for county maintenance and operations, fire, and solid waste.
Also during the public hearing, County Manager Jamie McCord sought to clarify some confusion as to why a property tax increase must be advertised even though the millage rate will not be going up.
“State law requires us to advertise if you don’t go with the full rollback rate and adjust the digest for the growth,” he said. “You can leave the millage rate the same but it brings in more money because the property values went up. We are going to be somewhere standard and full rollback. Those are the only options we have on the table. We cannot raise it. We can only either leave it the same or lower it.”
Two more public hearings will be held before the adoption of the millage rate.
Those hearings will be on July 25 at 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the Floyd County Commission chambers located at 12 East 4th Avenue.
