Forty Floyd County Schools teachers, ranging from grades K-4, and ELA coaches attended the Lexia LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) training.
“LETRS is the gold standard of professional learning for teachers of literacy,” stated Chief Academic Officer, John Parker. “This training is an investment in our teachers. We strongly believe in the science of reading, and we have been building our capacity, in that domain, for the better part of the last decade. Our goal is to have the most highly trained staff in Georgia. This will ultimately allow our students to reach their full potential.”
This training aimed to enhance their knowledge and skills in literacy instruction, enabling them to effectively support student learning.
During today’s session, the teachers delved into the science of how the brain learns to read and explored the various pathways involved in information processing. They also engaged in discussions on differentiating instruction and understanding how the brain constructs meaning from sounds and letters while reading.
The trainer provided an opportunity for the teachers to “learn to read” again by substituting phonemes with new symbols, allowing them to experience the challenges of reading fluently and constructing meaning.
“Our students deserve the best instruction and we are dedicated to providing just that,” said Dr. Tabatha Tierce, K-4 Literacy Specialist. “Our teachers have devoted many hours already to professionally grow with one another and with only one thing in mind: the student. When we know better, we do better.”
