Each February, the Floyd County Commission celebrates African American History Month by recognizing citizens who continue to serve the greater good.
On Tuesday, the commission honored four more citizens who have made an impact.
The first honoree was Ciara McKnight.
“Ciara works daily with after-school teen care for young ladies in an underserved portion of Rome and Floyd County out of the Fielder Center,” said Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord. “This program provides mentorship and counseling to over 25 ladies on a daily basis. Ciara has also been instrumental in assisting with the community at the Fielder Center by providing all children a safe place to play in the gym during the evening.”
Phillip and Marquita Davis were also honored.
“Marquita is co-founder and director of the new mentorship program at Main Elementary School,” McCord said. “She is the director of a tutorial group that provides tutoring and mentoring for students attending Main Elementary, Anna K. Davie, and Rome Middle and High Schools. She is also a Floyd Youth NAACP executive officer and is involved in the South Rome Community Association, One Community United, and other outreach programs not limited to just youth. Davis and her husband are a team, working closely with each other, assisting residents of Rome and Floyd County.”
The fourth honoree was Ralph Davis.
“Mr. Davis is a humble and steadfast advocate for the South Rome Community,” McCord said. “He has served as chair of the South Rome Redevelopment Corporation, now the South Rome Alliance, during which the South Rome Early Learning Center was created. He has overseen operations of the South Rome Community Garden for over ten years and has recently secured grant funding for garden renovations and expansion. Ralph is at the South Rome Community Garden and Community Center daily, helping to care for the property and overseeing routine maintenance.”
Floyd County residents were invited to submit the names of nominees for recognition.
