The Rome area lost 700 jobs from December to January, but that number is still up by 2,100 compared to January last year.
According to the Georgia Department of Labor, the Rome area’s labor force was 47,400 in January, down from 48,100 in December.
There were 45,300 jobs in January of 2023.
The Labor Department also reported that first-time claims for unemployment insurance rose from 379 in December to 952 in January.
There were 933 claims filed during the same time the year before.
Looking at surrounding counties:
Bartow was up from 321 to 845 over the month, but still lower than the 1,064 last year.
Gordon was up from 423 to 772. There were 857 in January of 2023.
Polk was up from 127 in December to 246 in January. There were 362 in January of last year.
And Chattooga went from 161 to 221 over the month compared to 234 last year.
