Motorist charged in death of pedestrian

A 43-year-old Coosa man is facing a felony charge of 1st-degree vehicular homicide after a pedestrian was struck and killed in the 300 block of Woods Road on Wednesday.

According to Floyd County Jail records:

Christopher Lee Gunnells was driving south when he traveled into the northbound lane and onto the shoulder of the road where his vehicle struck 41-year-old Amanda Diane Harris.

Harris was pronounced dead at the Atrium Floyd Emergency Room at 6:15 p.m. by Deputy Floyd County Coroner John Hamilton.

Her body has been sent to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy.

Gunnells admitted to reaching for an item in his vehicle, causing him to leave his lane of travel.

He also left a clear baggie of suspected methamphetamine in the back of a police patrol vehicle.

In addition to vehicular homicide, Gunnells is charged with possession of methamphetamine, reckless driving, failure to maintain a lane, and distracted driving.

He is also being held for a probation violation.
