The Floyd County Commission took time during its Tuesday meeting to honor those who have served in the armed forces for Veterans Day.
There are an estimated 100 veterans who are currently employed by the county.
“As I look at three reasons for Veterans Day, I look at the reason of honor,” said Floyd County Commissioner David Thornton. Honor those who served our country, who were willing to sign their name on the line, knowing they were possibly giving their life. So, I thank these veterans here with us tonight, the ones who are watching, and all the veterans who served for that.”
David Thornton, who is a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the 82nd Airborne.
“So, when we look at three reasons for Veterans Day, and why veterans are important, it’s to protect our freedom, to provide a way of life for our family and our country, and to risk their lives, possibly.”
Thornton was joined by fellow commissioner Mike Burnes, who serve in the U.S. Navy, along with Floyd County Public Safety Director John Blalock and Brian Jenkins with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, who both served in the U.S. Navy; Marcus Roberts with Floyd County Police who serves in the National Guard, and Tom Ewing with Floyd County Police, who is a veteran of the U.S. Army.
