We are about a month away from the annual Christmas with a Cop, sponsored by the Coosa Valley Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 14.

The event has been going on for about 25 years, according to Chris Fincher.

“The East Rome Walmart has been a really good partner with us in this,” he said. “There is no way to sign up. We take referrals from our counselors. They are in the schools, and they know the conditions and the situations of all the children. They have those relationships, so we felt like that is the best way to identify the needs within our schools. We take these kids shopping. We give them an allowance of $200, and an officer partners with them. They get to shop for as long as they want to.”

Previously, the public has never been asked to contribute to Christmas with a Cop, but that is different this year.

“If somebody in an office, maybe a couple of co-workers, want to pool some of their money together,” Fincher said. “For $200, you can adopt a child this Christmas and help us be able to help more kids. So, if you want to donate, you can look for us on our Facebook page, FOP LODGE 14, or you can contact me at Floyd County Emergency Management [(706) 236-5002], and I can work out arrangements with you. So, if you just want to call us at Emergency Management.”

Another way you can help is with the purchase of a t-shirt.

“We’ve had some good fundraisers this year, Fincher said. “We’ve been at the fair. We’ve done some bowling. Wire2Wire helped us with a 5K. We’re also selling t-shirts right now. If you look at our Facebook page, you will see a picture of our t-shirt that we have for sale. It’s a military green, but it has the Pledge of Allegiance on the back with a police officer saluting and a young child standing beside him. We’d love for you to buy one and support us in that way as well. Any help would certainly be appreciated.”
