Volunteers are getting ready to serve up turkey, dressing, and all the fixings to anyone in need of a meal on Thanksgiving Day.

The annual Thanksgiving Day Love Feast is Thursday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Rome Civic Center on Jackson Hill.

In addition to food, coats, and jackets will be available for those in need.

Organizer Rev. Terrell Shields told the Rome City Commission earlier this month that there is always a need, especially in difficult economic times.

“People are in dire need, not only around the world, but right here in Rome and Floyd County. We have many, many people who will not have dinner on Thanksgiving Day. There are those who will have to decide whether to have dinner on Thanksgiving Day or meals the rest of the week, or lights and gas.”

The first Love Feast, 38 years ago, fed around 900 people.

That number had grown to more than 2,600 by 2023.
