According to AAA, a record 39.4 million are expected to take road trips over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.
If you are going to be taking a trip to the beach or the mountains, Captain Ron Hunton with the Floyd County Police Department has some advice before you leave.
“Just start taking a look at your vehicle maintenance, and making sure you have things ready to go,” he said. “I would start with your tires. Are they in good shape? Do you have plenty of tread and proper air pressure? So many times our cars will tell us if a tire is low or something like that, and sometimes we can take that for granted because the little light didn’t come on. But you want to actually go and check those pressures.”
Remember to also check all your vehicle’s fluids like the coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and oil.
It’s also a good idea to check all of your vehicle’s lights.
“Just turn all your lights on and walk around the car to see if they are working,” Hunton said. “Check your headlights, high beams, and low beams, and if you have fog lights. Check the brake lights, tail lights, and don’t forget your tag lights. You have to have a light illuminating your tag. Cars also now have lights in the mirrors and different places, so remember to check all of them. You want to get those replaced if needed before you head out on your trip.”
Other things you will want to check include your belts.
The last thing you want to do is lose a belt while you are traveling on the interstate.
If you are unsure about how to check your vehicle’s parts, you can always run it to a mechanic, who can look it over.
Hunton was a guest on Monday’s First News with Doug Walker on WRGA.
