The Floyd County Commission has approved a bid for the resurfacing of Rush Chapel Road.
The project includes 2.67 miles, using a rubber-modified asphalt mix.
The bid from Northwest Georgia Paving, Inc. is in the amount of $398,160.
“This is a rubber tire smart mix grant that we acquired from the Georgia Environmental Protection Division,” said Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord. “It will cover the cost of adding the recycled tires. We will be recycling 800 tires per lane mile of asphalt that goes into place.”
This will be the second resurfacing project in Floyd County to use the modified asphalt, which has a percentage of ground-up tires as part of the aggregate.
The first was six-tenths of a mile on Terhune Road, which was completed in July of last year.
In addition to disposing of hundreds of tires per mile, the aggregate mix also provides improvements to the asphalt, such as skid resistance and hopefully longevity with the flexibility of the pavement.
The mix used for Terhune Road came from Liberty Tire, which gets tires from the scrap tire collection events held in Floyd County.
