Rome and Floyd County residents are invited to celebrate Arbor Day this Friday.
A ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. at the Mt. Berry Trailhead located behind the post office on Coligni Way.
“After lunch, come and stretch your legs and enjoy all the trees that our urban forestry department has put in,” said Hannah Bagley, Program Coordinator with Keep Rome-Floyd Beautiful. “Georgia Power will be there, passing out numerous species of tree seedlings. Lots of questions have been asked to me already, all those will be answered by an arborist.”
On Monday, a proclamation was read by Rome City Commissioner Jamie Doss, designating Friday as Arbor Day.
“Community trees improve public health and air quality,” Doss read. “Trees reduce erosion of our precious topsoil, increase property values and economic vitality in business areas, improve emergency efficiency through the shade, provide wildlife habitats, and beautify neighborhoods, parks, streets, and residential developments.”
The first Arbor Day was celebrated in 1872 in Nebraska as a special day to plant trees.
Since then, it has grown to thousands of celebrations in communities across the nation each year.
