There is growing confidence that we could see some sort of winter weather event this weekend.
It remains to be seen how severe or it will be snow or ice, Floyd County Public Works is getting ready.
“Fortunately, right now, we have advanced notice, and we have time to kind of just make sure,” said Floyd County Public Works Director Michael Skeen. “As we do every winter and almost on a weekly basis, we cycle through some of our frozen treatment equipment, like our spreaders. Some of it changed recently. A few years ago, we went to the brine, where we pre-treat some, as much as we can. I came in early this morning, and they had the light on. You could see that they were in there, just making sure it was fresh.”
According to Skeen, the Georgia Department of Transportation usually begins treating state routes about 48 hours prior to the arrival of the precipitation.
“You will likely see them—just say right now if this is scheduled for midnight on Saturday—I’d say by midnight on Thursday, GDOT will be running,” he said. “You will see their trucks hitting all the state routes, and of course, this is a little different. We could have some rain on Friday and Saturday before the freezing, and that could dilute the solution.”
Of course, the weather picture will become clearer the closer we get to the weekend.
