The Rome Symphony Orchestra (RSO) invites the community to an intimate and unforgettable evening of chamber music with “Quintet for Piano & Winds,”
on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m.
Featuring two extraordinary piano quintets that span the Classical and Romantic eras, the RSO will highlight the exquisite artistry of the chamber genre from the stage of the Rome City Auditorium, offering an evening of contrasting and beautiful musical dialogue.
“Experience the refined elegance and effortless brilliance of Mozart’s beloved Piano Quintet in E-flat major, a cornerstone of the chamber music repertoire, paired with the lush lyricism of the lesser-known Piano Quintet in F minor by Fritz Spindler,” said Jeffrey Dokken, Music Director and Conductor of the Rome Symphony Orchestra. “Together, these works offer a compelling contrast — one universally celebrated, the other a true hidden gem.”
Chamber music is an intimate form of classical music performed by a small ensemble, traditionally defined by the rule of “one performer per part.” By highlighting the sophisticated, egalitarian interplay between individual musicians — often described as “the music of friends” — the genre transforms a performance into a nuanced musical conversation. This setting offers audiences a powerful and personal connection to the artists that can only be captured in such a close-knit environment.
The RSO’s masterful pairing of these two complementary piano quintets will be brought to life through the talents of Rebecca Testerman (oboe), Diane Hargreaves (clarinet), Nib McKinney (bassoon), Kathleen Ray (horn), and Kyla Zollitsch (piano). Together, they will perform Mozart’s Quintet for Piano, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, and Bassoon K.V. 452 and Spindler’s Quintet for Piano, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, and Bassoon Op. 360.
“We are thrilled to bring a seminal masterpiece of the genre together with an underappreciated Romantic jewel. This concert is a rare opportunity to experience chamber music at its most expressive, personal, and emotionally rich,” Dokken added.

The RSO’s 104th season will continue on Saturday, April 18, with the RSO’s presentation of Schubert’s Symphony No. 4. Please note that the previously scheduled performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony will now take place as part of a future RSO season.
