With the initial stabilization work completed, the next stage for the Historic Floyd County Courthouse will be debris removal, which will allow county officials to get inside to see what can and cannot be done with the 134-year-old structure.
Before that can happen, the insurance companies for the county, engineers, and contractors who have been working on the building want to get their experts inside.
“They will sort of look through to make sure that everything that needs to be preserved is preserved, so that all of that process can proceed as it needs to,” said Floyd County Attorney Chris Jackson. “We were having some difficulties sort of getting all of those folks together. It is really best for it to be one inspection on-site for safety and for continuity to make sure everyone is on the same page.”
According to Jackson, that meeting is now scheduled for June 26.
“We are happy to get that moving,” he said. “Obviously, insurance funds are being used to pay for storage and things like that, and we want to be able to move on to the next stage as quickly as possible.”
The historic courthouse was heavily damaged in a fire back on March 23.
