At a meeting of the General Administration Committee on noon of Tuesday, Public Information Officer Doug Walker spoke to the committee asking for permission to locate a recent project of Rome Rotary. That being a space designed to honor the Cherokee Nation as they lived within North Georgia.
During his time in the meeting, Walker made several points as to the effort to properly memorialize the Cherokee Nation. The proposed memorial will be specifically in remembrance of the removal of the Cherokee Nation, and will is proposed to be a 25 square foot plaza with a statue in the center. As of the time of the meeting the fund for the memorial has reached $33,000 in donations with an additional $10,000 pledged. Walker also said he will be applying for grants for the memorial as well, as the memorial has not asked for any government funding and, as it stands, does not plan to. At the meeting Walker asked for permission to locate the memorial at Ridge Ferry Park near the Chieftans Museum. Upkeep of the memorial will be paid for by Rome Rotary.
Walker referred to the space as a “living educational space”, hoping that local schools with visit the memorial as a learning experience. Walker stated that the proposed end date is sometime next year. Coincidentally the 200th anniversary of the adoption of the Cherokee Nation Constitution by the Cherokee Nation.
