It’s only early October, but the Salvation Army of Rome is already getting ready for Christmas.
An effort to get winter coats for kids that started around 50 years ago in Kentucky has evolved into an effort to provide Christmas for kids in need.
The 2026 Angel Tree Christmas assistance sign-up is underway now until October 14.
“We try to get something to wear, something to read, and some kind of a toy for kids who really need it,” said Lt. Cory Tilly with the Salvation Army. “For some of these kids that are applying, this is the only Christmas they’re going to see. So, what we do is we take these applications for families who need assistance, we put them on a tree–and a lot of times you should be able to see them in your Walmarts–and people can take a tag. It’ll have a first name, the sizes of clothing, something that that child needs, and something that they want.”
The registration is for Floyd, Polk, and Chattooga County residents.
“Because we need to verify identity and some documents, they actually come to our office,” Tilly Added. So, this week and next week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and again next Saturday, they’ll come to our office on Second Avenue. We’re taking applications from nine until noon and 1 to 3 p.m.”
The Saturday, October 17 registration will be from 1 until 5 p.m.
The program is open to children 12 and under as well as seniors 65 and older.
Remember to bring a photo ID for the applicant, proof of residency and income, as well as a birth certificate and documentation of SNAP, TANF, Medicaid, food stamps, or other assistance received.
