If you need somewhere to cool off during the heat of the day, there is some good news.
According to Floyd County Emergency Management Agency Director Tim Herrington, there are some cooling stations being opened.
“I have been in contact with the United Way office, and we do have a couple of cooling stations available for folks who need them,” he said. “One is going to be at the United Way office off of North Broad Street. There will be another one at the Parker Recreation Center off of Kingston Road. Both of those will be available from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Then, of course, you can always go up to the mall. It’d be a good time to window shop and hang out at the food court.”
Herrington added that citizens should be prepared for the long haul this summer.
“You need to understand that this is the early part of summer,” he said. “We haven’t hit our hot months yet, and that is going to be July and August. So, you need to start preparing for the hot weather that’s lying ahead of us. It’s going to be extremely hot, if this week is any indication of what we’ve got to look forward to.”
EMA is also coordinating with the United Way to distribute box fans for anyone who needs them.
Call the EMA office at (706) 236-5002 for more information.
Herrington was a guest on Wednesday’s First News with Doug Walker on WRGA.
