The City of Rome’s Finance Committee is expected to discuss the 2025 millage rate when it meets on Wednesday.
Last year, the city commission approved a reduction in the rate for maintenance and operations from 7.8 to 7.75.
The rate for city capital was set at 1.75 in 2024, down from 1.8 in 2023.
The rate for Rome City Schools went from 16.85 to 16.75 last year.
In April, the commission approved an estimated rate for 2025.
Due to legislation passed by the Georgia General Assembly, local taxing authorities are now required to submit an estimated ad valorem tax mill rate before the distribution of property assessment notices and submission of the annual tax digest by the local Board of Tax Assessors.
Rome City Manager Sammy Rich stressed at that time, since they didn’t have the net digest yet, there was not really a valid way to come up with an estimate. So, the estimated rate may not necessarily be the final number.
“What we have done is to simply endeavor to do what we thought might be a worst-case scenario,” he said. “For maintenance and operations for the City of Rome, it would be 9.8 mills, and that includes our normal capital rate of 1.8. Additionally, for Rome City Schools, we have that at 17.25. Across the board, those are roughly 3 percent increases. Again, what we envisioned as a worst-case scenario.”
The finance committee will also review May 2025 financial statements during the meeting, which begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Sam King Room at Rome City Hall.
