Now that the tower at the Historic Floyd County Courthouse has been stabilized, county officials are starting the next phase of cleanup.
Floyd County manager Jamie McCord recently gave an update.
“As you are aware, QPS [Quality Plus Services] has completed the stabilization phase and structural banding has been tensioned and put into place,” he said. “We got the roads opened back up and our next step will be debris removal, pending the final report from the fire marshal. Then, we will also be moving forward with structural testing and trying to determine the use going forward, including what portions of the building, if any, that we can utilize and save.”
The 134-year-old structure was damaged in a fire on March 23.
Security fencing has gone up around the old courthouse.
The Floyd County Commission recently approved an agreement with Georgia Power for exterior lighting for security purposes.
This requires a budget increase of $3,700 but the cost will be covered by insurance proceeds.
