Floyd County Public Animal Welfare Services is seeing results from its public spay-neuter effort.
According to P.A.W.S. Director Katy Walters, they are up from 47 to 83 since this time last year, a 77 percent increase.
Walters also praised the medical staff at the facility.
“They have been working extremely hard, and it is showing in our numbers,” she said. “Animals that have died while being housed have dropped from 23 last year at this time to 10. It’s a 57 percent decrease, thanks to the hard work of our vet and our tech.”
Walters, who recently updated the county’s public safety committee, said the news was not all good, as adoptions are down significantly from last year.
“As well as rescues and fosters,” she added. “That’s happening while our calls for service are up another 4 percent from last year. We’re taking in more and getting less out, unfortunately. We do have some initiatives starting, like free adoption days and things like that to hopefully get the public back in here and get some more animals out.”
