A young man, whose life was likely saved by blood transfusions, is paying it forward.
Seven and a half years ago, Will Bowerman was involved in an automobile accident that left him with a ruptured spleen, a lacerated liver, a broken back, and several other broken bones.
Blood transfusions helped get Will stable for surgery and literally saved his life.
Now, Will is teaming up with ESP (Extra Special People) to host a blood drive this coming Friday.
“Summer is a really dire time for blood, and there are fewer donations because there are fewer students willing to donate,” he said. “At the same time, there are more actual traumas because people are going on vacation, and going to the lake.”

Due to the injury to his spleen in that wreck, Will is unable to donate blood himself.
“Even though I am not allowed to donate, or can’t donate due to the quality of my blood, I can still help raise blood donations, and figuratively donate,” he said.
Bowerman is now a senior at Darlington and has been volunteering with ESP for about four years now.
“Each year, I fell more and more in love with it,” he added. “It’s about exposing the community and giving people with special needs a good time, and just making sure that everyone feels that they can be included.”
Friday’s blood drive will begin at around 9 a.m. at Georgia Highlands College on Highway 27 South.
