The Floyd County Commission approved several investments in public safety, county infrastructure, recreational opportunities, and essential government services during its meeting on Tuesday, July 28.
Commissioners approved the acceptance of a $150,000 High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas grant for the Floyd County Police Department. The funds can be used by the local police department to fight drug activity locally.
The Board also approved converting lighting at police department headquarters to energy-efficient LED fixtures. The $129,465 project is funded through the 2023 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) paving and infrastructure account and is expected to cost approximately $20,537 less than the amount budgeted for the work.
Additional public safety action included approval of required property documentation for future closeout of the Public Safety and Community Violence Reduction Act grant. The documentation covers interview-room recording equipment purchased for the police department.
Commissioners also approved two vehicle purchases to support county operations. The Water Department will purchase a Ford F-150 from Hardy Family Ford for $35,245, using capital savings and insurance reimbursement funds. Public Works will purchase a Ford F-350 from Prater Ford for $64,165, which was budgeted at $75,000, creating $10,835 in savings that may be used to equip the vehicle.
The Board also approved a temporary premises-use agreement with Atlanta’s Event Specialists for ice skating at Ridge Ferry Park during the holiday season. Related budget adjustments expected $119,030 in projected revenue and $106,885 in expenses associated with the seasonal attraction.
Other approved items included the acceptance of a Georgia Power rebate for energy-efficient equipment installed during the police department headquarters project.
The Commission also reappointed Sundai Stevenson to the Floyd County Development Authority for a term ending June 30, 2030, and Robert Owens to the Department of Family and Children Services Board for a term ending June 30, 2031.
