October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Hospitality House for Women is gearing up for its annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event.
Community members are invited to walk down Broad Street in women’s shoes to shed light on the fact that you can never understand a person’s situation until you’ve walked in their shoes.
The event will begin with registration at 11 am on Saturday in the back garden at the Sara Hightower Regional Library.
“The walk is just one block around Broad Street,” said Angela Harris with Hospitality House. “The walk is starting at noon. We will have a program this year with nine Challenger teams, so it will also be a really, really fun activity for all the community, and we are really excited for that.”
Last week, both the Rome City and Floyd County Commissions read proclamations for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
“Thank you so much, commissioners, for your support and also for the community support always with Hospitality House.,” Harris told city commissioners. It’s a lot of work. Unfortunately, last year, we had one fatality in Rome, so the work is still something really important. It’s important for the community that we talk about it, that we raise awareness together and support our community.”
The walk coincides with the Hospitality House for Women’s “Paint the Town Purple,” a vibrant community movement dedicated to raising awareness and crucial funds for survivors of domestic violence.
